Course Content
  • You will be required to undertake and have an understanding of a number of different core skills, knowledge and behaviours in order to complete this apprenticeship. These include:

    Principles of plant growth and development
    Plant nutrition requirements
    Ways to reduce waste
    How to use equipment correctly
    Cultivating soils for differing purposes
    Controlling plant pests and diseases
    Identifying plants

    The following qualifications will be required prior to taking the end point assessment: Emergency first aid: Level 3 award in emergency first aid at work.Pesticides: Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance OR Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides.

    If you do not already hold Level 1 Functional Skills in maths and English (GCSE grade 2 or E), you will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English prior to taking the end-point assessment.You will be required to attend college one day a week.
Entry Requirements
  • GCSE grade 2 or E in maths and English or level 1 functional skills in maths and English.

    Entry is subject to a successful interview and you will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English regardless of previous qualifications. You must be working under a suitable and relevant contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week. If you do not have an employer, we may be able to help you find one.
Next Steps
  • You will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard or to continue working within the industry.

  • Work as a gardener, planning and maintaining large gardens, parks and green spaces, garden centres etc.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students. Students will also earn a full-time wage while they are working for their apprenticeship employer.
You will need access to a PC/laptop to develop your e-portfolio.You may be required to purchase PPE and/or tools to use at work.

Materials Required

Suitable work clothes and steel toe-capped safety boots - all protective equipment will be inspected by the course instructor. Waterproofs/change of clothes in case of inclement weather, Gloves. Writing Materials - notebook and pen.
