Course Information

This course is ideal for those who want to start a career as a sports turf operative or a groundsman. You will be responsible for the maintenance, renovation and overall appearance of one or more sports turf surfaces depending on the particular sport you are working in.

You will build a portfolio of evidence at college and in the workplace with project based assessments on industry subjects.

Course Content
  • You will be required to undertake and have an understanding of a number of different core skills, knowledge and behaviours in order to complete this apprenticeship. These include:

    How to identify and use the correct materials, tools and equipment for grounds keeping
    How to monitor, record and report findings
    Environmental, and health and safety law and regulations
    An understanding of different types of surface and problems associated with them
    How to minimise waste and reduce environmental impacts

    If you do not already hold Level 1 Functional Skills in maths and English (GCSE grade 2 or E), you will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English prior to taking the end-point assessment.

    You will be required to attend college one day a week. This standard is recognised by the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG), the Professional Body for Sports Turf Operatives and others working in the grounds care industry. Upon achievement of this standard the apprentice will be eligible to join the IOG register of Turf Management Professionals.
Entry Requirements
  • GCSE grade 2 or E in maths and English or level 1 functional skills in maths and English.

    Entry is subject to a successful interview and you will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English regardless of previous qualifications. You must be working under a suitable and relevant contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week. If you do not have an employer, we may be able to help you find one.

  • The career as a Sports Turf Operative can be quite varied, potentially working across a wide range of different sports and venues, including athletics, bowls, cricket, croquet, football, hockey, horse racing, rugby league and union, tennis and ranging from general parks type sports surfaces up to first class stadia.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students. Students will also earn a full-time wage while they are working for their apprenticeship employer.
You will need access to a PC/laptop to develop your e-portfolio.You may be required to purchase PPE and/or tools to use at work.

Materials Required

Suitable work clothes and steel toe-capped safety boots - all protective equipment will be inspected by the course instructor. Waterproofs/change of clothes in case of inclement weather, Gloves. Writing Materials - notebook and pen.
