Would you like a career working with animals but don’t want to be in the classroom full-time? An Apprenticeship in Work-based Animal Care can help you into a rewarding profession that is much more like a way of life than a job.

As an Apprentice you earn while you learn, getting a recognised qualifications and essential skills to springboard you into your future. You will receive training and mentoring in the workplace which will be guided and supported by your college Trainer/Assessor.

  • Level 2 - Animal Care & Welfare Assistant - Standard
Course Content
  • You will be required to undertake and have an understanding of a number of different core skills, knowledge and behaviours in order to complete this apprenticeship. These include: How to handle animals safely , Feeding, cleaning and grooming animals, Looking after injured or sick animals , Maintaining animal enclosures and Identifying hazards.

    You will also need to achieve one additional knowledge and skills option from the following list: Animal Interaction and Handling, Rehoming , Movement and Transportation , Operational/Reception Duties, Breeding , Working Dog Handler, Wildlife Rehabilitation, Veterinary Care Support.
Entry Requirements
  • GCSE grade 2 or E in maths and English or level 1 functional skills in maths and English. Entry is subject to a successful interview and you will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English regardless of previous qualifications.

    You must be working under a suitable and relevant contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week. If you do not have an employer, we may be able to help you find one.

  • You will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard or to continue working within the industry.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students. Students will also earn a full-time wage while they are working for their apprenticeship employer.
You will need access to a PC/laptop to develop your e-portfolio. You may be required to purchase PPE and/or tools to use at work.
