Course Information

Combining a mixture of theory and practical, this is a very hands-on qualification ideally suited to someone who wishes to investigate a career in horticulture and perhaps study further. No previous knowledge is required, but a willingness to learn new skills and develop knowledge of the world of horticulture is needed.

  • Practical horticultural skills
    Using machinery, tools & equipment
    Introduction to growing, maintaining & protecting plants
    Identifying a range of trees, shrubs & plants
    Estate maintenance & landscape skills
Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs grade 2/E or above, including English and maths. Interest and enthusiasm in working in the land-based industries is essential. Other experience within the land-based industries will also be considered.

  • Level 2 - Technical Certificate diploma in Horticulture, Apprenticeship in Horticulture
Career Opportunities
  • With further training: gardener, nursery worker (plants), assistant in a garden centre, landscaper.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.

Materials Required

Basic stationery: calculator, pens, paper and lever arch files. Suitable outdoor clothing - the clothing must be suitable for environment, weather and time of year. Protective overalls. Steel toe capped work boots. Steel toe capped wellington boots. Hi-vis yellow vest. Tetanus protection is recommended. All protective equipment will be inspected by the Course Manager
