Course Information

This two year course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and is an ideal qualification for school leavers and mature students to learn horticulture at a higher level. It enables those who already have some experience to develop expertise in a wide range of subjects relevant to the industry. Using our fantastic campus facilities, including newly re-developed glasshouses, you will gain a broad understanding in a range of horticultural subjects including applied plant science, turf management and garden design.

The course also provides opportunities to meet with industry experts and potential employers and to showcase your skills to local clients by becoming involved in College-supported community and private projects. The qualification is supported by: The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), The Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC) and British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI).

    Plant knowledge and identification

    Machinery use and operation
    Maintain turf in parks and gardens
    Garden design, production and landscape construction
    Plant propagation – glasshouse and nursery techniques
    Principles of plant science/health, protection and soil science
    Decorative horticulture, including plant establishment & pruning
    Business management in the land based sector
    Undertake a specialist project in the land based sector
    Construct horizontal landscape surfaces
Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including English, maths and a science OR a relevant Level 2 Certificate at Distinction level OR an Apprenticeship in horticulture with good levels of maths and English. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will also be considered. Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience, a keen and active interest in commercial gardening and landscaping with the ability to cope with written work is required.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
Contribution towards day trips.

Materials Required

Basic stationery: calculator, pens, paper and lever arch files. Suitable outdoor clothing - the clothing must be suitable for environment, weather and time of year. Protective overalls. Steel toe capped work boots. Steel toe capped wellington boots. Hi-vis yellow vest. Tetanus protection is recommended. All protective equipment will be inspected by the Course Manager
