Do you want to work in the exciting world of outdoor adventure? Do you enjoy a practical approach to learning? This Level 3 course gives you the underpinning knowledge & skills to develop a career in sport and outdoor adventure through in depth theory and practical development.

You will become more proficient in your practical ability in activities like kayaking, climbing and caving and will learn the skills that will enable you to flourish in the outdoor sports industry. It is also the ideal course for progress to Higher Education. Students will need to maintain appropriate level of fitness throughout the course, work on teamwork and communication skills and participate in a wide range of practical activities.

The programme includes written assignments and classroom work alongside the practicals, so the ability to work to deadlines is crucial. There is also an opportunity to take part in and experience expeditions and additional practical qualifications.

Course Content
  • Units include:

    Year 1: During the first year of this course you will complete the Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Outdoor Adventure.

    Year 2:
    Equipment and facilities for outdoor and adventurous activities
    Sports coaching
    Leading land-based outdoor and adventurous activities
    Leading water-based outdoor and adventurous activities
    Outdoor and adventurous expeditions
    Impact & sustainability in outdoor adventure
    Physical exercise & care of young people.

    Practical content includes:
    Climbing, mountain biking, caving, navigation, paddlesport (kayaking & canoeing), ropes course, archery, orienteering (including competitions), personal training (gym) and team sports. You will take part in several expeditions culminating in a week long expedition in the UK or abroad.

    You will also have the opportunity to gain other coaching and leadership qualifications, National Governing Body (NGB) Awards and Functional Skills.
Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C / 4+, including English and maths OR Level 2 Diploma at Merit level plus English and maths grades A*-C / 4+. You will need a proven enthusiasm and experience in outdoor adventure.

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
Kit costs. There may be some additional costs towards expeditions.

Materials Required

A kit list will be provided before the start of the course. Approach shoes, sports kit and suitable outdoor clothing - the clothing must be suitable for the environment and time of year, advice on all of these will be given on induction. Basic stationery - pens, pencils, ruler, eraser and notebook. KMC polo shirt - Kingston Maurward College Outdoor Adventure & Sports Coaching polo shirt. Waterproofs, wellington boots, swimwear & towel and kit bag/rucksack.
