Course Information

This two year course aims to help develop the skills and knowledge required to gain employment in the uniformed public services. If you are interested in a career in the Police, HM Customs & Excise, Probation Service, Fire & Rescue Service, Immigration or any public sector related job, then this is the course for you. This qualification requires motivation and a good academic level of achievement as it gives learners the opportunity to progress into Higher Education or employment in the Public Service Sector.

The course is specifically designed to provide a balance between academic and 'hands-on'. The first year of study will be focussed on vocational studies whilst the second year will help develop your leadership qualities. Alongside practical and vocational learning the study programme requires written assignments and classroom work with the aim of developing students to become fully independent researchers, so you will need to be disciplined in your time management of assignments. It is designed to give a realistic approach to achieving a career within the uniformed public services.

Course Content
  • You will take part in many practical activities including high ropes, climbing, kayaking and you will also achieve a good level of fitness! In addition you could achieve the following qualifications: First aid All students will have the opportunity to join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme (DofE) and can participate in Football and Rugby at various levels with the chance of joining the British Colleges Leagues college team.

    Year 2 units:
    3 Global Affairs, the Media and the Uniformed Protective Services
    6 Government and the Protective Services
    7 Planning for and Responding to Emergency Incidents
    8 Custodial Care
    11 Expedition Skills
    12 Developing Personal Fitness Programmes
    19 Professional Development in the Uniformed Protective Services
Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs at minimum grades 9-4 / A*-C, including English and maths OR a Level 2 Diploma at Merit level including English and maths grades 9-4 / A*-C. You need a keen interest in outdoor adventure/sport/uniformed public services.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
You will be required to purchase kit at the start of the course at £120 - this cost will include a contribution towards additional educational visits. It is also recommended that applicants set aside £50 towards costs of the expedition which is held at the end of the course. All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided.

Materials Required

You will have the opportunity to purchase uniform at enrolment. As the course runs through the winter you will need plenty of warm clothes waterproofs and fitness training kit.
