Course Information

This course is ideal for those who are looking to progress their career in Horticulture and take the next step to becoming a supervisor or chargehand. You will build a portfolio of evidence at college and in the workplace with project based assessments on industry subjects.

This course can be taken as part of an advanced apprenticeship or as a stand-alone qualification and can follow two pathways: Sports Turf or Parks, Gardens and Green Spaces.

Course Content
  • Your e-portfolio and units selected will reflect your skills in planning, monitoring and evaluation, for example:

    Estimate and programme resource
    Manage drainage and irrigation
    First Aid
    Establishing grass swards
    Evaluate ground and environmental conditions
    Planning for Sports Turf or Decorative ornamental features
    Manage pests, diseases and disorders.

    If you do not already hold Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (GCSE grade 4 or C), you will need to achieve this prior to completing the apprenticeship.You will be required to attend college one day a week.
Entry Requirements
  • GCSE A*-C or equivalent English and maths. Level 2 Horticulture or related qualification.

    Entry is subject to a successful interview and you will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English regardless of previous qualifications. You must be working under a suitable and relevant contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week. If you do not have an employer, we may be able to help you find one.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students. Students will also earn a full-time wage while they are working for their apprenticeship employer.
Learners will need access to a PC, laptop or tablet to develop their e-portfolio.

Materials Required

Writing materials - note pad and pen.Industry publications - available from the college library. Suitable outdoor clothing - waterproofs, warm clothing, safety boots, etc. Packed lunch and drink if we are working away from the college all day.
