Course Information

Are you interested in a future working with animals and care about the environment? Do you need some extra support to achieve your career aims? This one year course will give you the opportunity to develop your knowledge, practical skills and team working by working with a range of animal species. A number of written and practical assessments will be completed.

During this one year course you will also develop the abilities, personal qualities and employability skills to equip you for the next level course or future employment.You are required to complete at least 60 hours work experience at an employer within the animal industry.

Course Content
  • Topics covered include:

    Husbandry of animals including: feeding, cleaning out and health checking
    Handling, restraint and exercising of animals
    Safe and effective working
    Performance in the land-based industry.
Entry Requirements
  • GCSE grades 2/E or above, including math and English OR Entry 3 Functional Skills OR an Entry Level qualification. Attitude to learning will also be taken into account.
Next Steps
  • Dependendent on attitude to learning, attendance and GCSE grades L2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care, Intermediate Apprenticeship in Animal Care.
Career Opportunities
  • A range within the animal industry including: animal care assistant, kennel and cattery assistant, pet shop assistant.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
College academy uniform, including steel toe capped boots.Trips.

Materials Required

Basic stationery - pens, pencils, glue stick, A4 lever arch files, scientific calculator, ruler and eraser. Access to IT equipment both at College and at home.
