Course Information

Working with animals can be challenging but is a truly rewarding career. This is an ideal opportunity to develop your interest and skills in caring for a wide variety of animals and their environment, preparing you for employment or progression to further courses in a beautiful setting.

This one year course contains a mix of lectures, demonstrations, project and practical work providing you with the skills and knowledge to either enter employment or continue on in education. The course requires at least 150 hrs of work experience with an external employer within the animal care industry.

Course Content
  • Topics covered include:

    Animal husbandry, looking after a range of animals including companion, small mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates and livestock
    Animal Behaviour and handling and grooming of animals
    Animal biology
    British Wildlife and its habitats
    Developing your English and math skills.
Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs at Grade 3/D or above (including English Language, math and science) OR minimum GCSE Grade 3/D and Level 1 Functional Skills. A genuine interest in caring for animals, willingness to learn and motivation to gain a relevant work experience placement.
Next Steps
  • Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management, or employment.

  • Pet shop assistant/retail assistant, Animal care assistant, Kennel and cattery worker, Animal boarding assistant, Animal/Dog groomer (with further training).

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
College uniform including steel toe capped boots.Exam resits.Trips.

Materials Required

Basic stationery -folders, pens, pencils, glue stick, paper, scientific calculator, ruler and eraser. Access to IT equipment both at College and at home.
