Course Information

This one year course will introduce and develop skills in welding, fabrication and blacksmithing and provide a sound introduction to working with metals. You will study for a NCFE Level 1 Award in Creative Craft (Heritage and Traditional Craft) and a City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Engineering.

Those who successfully complete this Level 1 course to a high standard are able to progress onto the Level 2 Blacksmithing and Metalworking study programme.

Course Content
  • Students will study Arc and MIG welding, introduction to fabrication, TIG welding, introduction to gas cutting, safe use of tools, use of the forge, blacksmithing tools, Functional skills in numeracy and literacy or GCSE English and maths will be included if appropriate. Visit to industry professionals and masterclasses also add a deeper understanding of the industry.
Entry Requirements
  • 2 GCSEs at grade 2/E or above to include English, maths and design technology (or equivalent).Mature applicants should contact the Course Manager to discuss the entry requirements.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
A £100 contribution towards the cost of course materials is payable at the start of the course.

Materials Required

Although PPE is available, we firmly advise students to provide their own welding mask and goggles and any items of a personal nature for their own hygiene protection. AEL uniform (polo shirt and sweat shirt), Flame retardant protective overalls, Steel toecap safety boots. Pen, paper, lever arch files, Stationery required for technical drawing e.g. pencils, ruler, compass
