Course Information

Taster course for budding veterinarians.

This is an essential residential week long course for lower sixth form students who are planning on applying to veterinary school in September/October to become a veterinarian. It will give you the crucial experience required to get your application noticed by the admissions team of any veterinary college.

The course will aim to give students an appreciation of what life is like as a large animal vet. There will be visits to an abattoir, fat stock auction sales and other specialist farms who are well respected in the industry. Lab work will be conducted by one of our renowned resident vets who will also take you through care of the dairy cow foot on farm.

The Royal Veterinary College will also be able to let you know what the current thinking is with some of the diseases that occur in farm animals.

    Example Timetable
    (SUBJECT TO CHANGE) Sunday – 26th July 16:00-17:00 Arrival
    Each student will attend and help with one morning milking
    Monday Morning: Grazing dairy, Lunchtime: Application process, Afternoon: Pathology/Bacteriology/PM
    Evening: Social Event with Staff
    Tuesday Morning: Salisbury Livestock Market, Afternoon: Calf health, Evening: Practical Experience
    Wednesday Morning: Outdoor pig farm, Afternoon: Dairy Farm, Evening: Diseases of welfare importance
    Thursday Morning: Abattoir visit, Afternoon: Robotic dairy farm, Evening: Different career paths
    Friday Morning: Goat dairy, Afternoon: Sheep handling,Round up and departure.
