Course Information

This apprenticeship is aimed at those who are looking to work in public parks and gardens, green spaces and historic gardens, private gardens and estates or in production nurseries and many retail outlets. Many businesses will be specialised in their activities, such as grounds maintenance (soft-maintenance) or landscape construction (hard-landscape).

Course Content
  • There are two routes available: horticulture or landscaping.

    The horticulture pathway focuses on plant propagation and plant growth.

    The landscape construction option focuses on the installation of features and structures; application of landscaping materials as well as supporting site management. Alongside a strong practical skill base, apprentices will learn about legislation and policy, plant identification, weed control and biosecurity before undertaking route specific learning.

    The apprenticeship consists of 18 months to complete the underpinning theory and practical work with an additional three months to complete the End Point Assessment.
Entry Requirements
  • GCSE grade 2 or E in maths and English or level 1 functional skills in maths and English.
    Entry is subject to a successful interview and you will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English regardless of previous qualifications.
    You must be working under a suitable and relevant contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week.
Next Steps
  • You will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard or to continue working within the industry.
Career Opportunities
  • Work as a gardener, planning and maintaining large gardens, parks and green spaces, garden centres etc.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students. Students will also earn a full-time wage while they are working for their apprenticeship employer.

Materials Required

You will need access to a PC/laptop to develop your e-portfolio.
You may be required to purchase PPE and/or tools to use at work.
