If you are interested in entering Higher Education or changing your career pathway this one year course will give you the skills, knowledge and confidence to do so.
This course enables those 19+ learners returning to education, from a range of backgrounds, to develop their practical skills and knowledge to work with a range of animals.

This one year course contains a mixture of theory lessons, demonstrations, projects and practical work involving our onsite college animal collection. The course also requires you to complete at least 150 hours of work experience with an external employer within the animal care industry, which will bolster your CV or career prospects should you wish to gain employment after the course.

Course Content
  • Topics covered include:

    Animal husbandry - you will work extensively with our onsite animal collection which houses a range of small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates and livestock.
    Animal welfare involving health checking and the monitoring of animal behaviour.
    Animal biology.
    Animal nutrition.
    Exotic animal management.
    Animal training.
    Business management.
Entry Requirements
  • This course is open to 19+ learners only.
    4 GCSEs Grade 4/C or above to include English and maths.
    Science GCSE (triple award) 554 or (double award) 55.
    Other relevant qualifications or experience will also be considered.
    A genuine interest in caring for animals, a willingness and passion to return to learning and motivation to gain a relevant level 3 qualification are essential.

  • Employment or Higher Education. This could be a degree course at KMC in the Animal Welfare and Science department or another degree course in a different university.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
All learners wear a college uniform: a KMC branded, blue polo shirt, blue cargo trousers and steel toe capped boots.
Trips are also planned into the year at an additional cost.

Materials Required

Basic stationery - pens, pencils, glue stick, A4 lever arch file, scientific calculator, ruler and eraser.
Access to IT equipment both at college and at home are needed to engage fully with all lessons.
