Kingston Maurward is please to be working with Pearson BTEC to offer an Higher National Diploma in Equine Management. The course is highly industry focused with great opportunity to develop practical as well as academic skills. The objectives of the Higher National Diploma in in Equine Management are:

To equip students with Animal Management skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global Equine Management environment.

To provide education and training for a range of careers in Animal Management, including Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Animal Science, Veterinary Practice Management and Equine Management.

To provide insight and understanding into the diversity of roles within Equine Management, recognising the importance of collaboration at all levels.

To provide opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in Equine Management, or progress to higher education qualifications such as an Honours degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Animal Science, Equine Science or a related area

Course Content
  • The course has eight units in the first year:

    Animal Health and Welfare
    Business and Business Environment
    Animal Anatomy and Physiology
    Horse Husbandry
    Managing Equine facilities
    Animal Behaviour in Society
    Animal Nutrition
    Managing a Successful Project
    These develop core skills and knowledge in Equine Behaviour, Welfare and Husbandry.
    In the second year, students study units aimed at progression into equine industry specialisms.
    Core modules:

    Research Project (30 credits)
    Biological Processes
    Anthrozoology
    Equine Health and Disease
    Work Experience
    Therapy and Rehabilitation
    Behavioural approaches to Equine Management
    There will also be a range of option units at Level 5 available.
Entry Requirements
  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Equine or Animal Management (1080) - City and Guilds or BTEC - grade PPP or above, or MP for the 720 credit Extended Diploma.
    A Levels to a combination of 48 UCAS points - key subjects Biology, Psychology

    Applicants should have GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 or above. Applicants should be able to demonstrate riding ability or experience working with horses.

    Mature students may want to discuss qualifications and experience before applying, but are not exempt from the course if they do not have specific entry qualifications.

    international students can apply but should have achieved IELTS at 5.5 or above.

Career Opportunities
  • This allows progression onto Level 6 BSc (Hons) Top Up courses at Universities and Colleges in equine or animal related studies.

    Employment opportunities would include equine facilities management, riding instructors and riding school management, behaviour and equine consultancy.

Materials Required

Learners will have practical sessions and should ensure they have correct PPE. This includes suitable clothing, steel toe boots, water proof and other specific riding equipment. Learners will also find it useful to have their own devices (laptops, tablets) to bring to college for classwork and to access learning materials.
