Kingston Maurward is excited to be able to offer the BTEC Higher National in Public Services to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the public services sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The objectives of the BTEC Higher Nationals in Public Services are as follows:
equip students with public service skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global public services environment
provide education and training for a range of careers in public services, including, for example, local government, Civil Service, public administration, the armed forces, police force, fire and rescue services, ambulance (not paramedic), prison service and the charity and voluntary sector
provide insight and understanding into the diversity of roles within public services, recognising the importance of collaboration at all levels
provide opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in public services, or progress to higher education qualifications such as an Honours degree in Criminology, Policing, Applied Social Sciences, Public Services Management or a related area
support students to understand the local, regional and global context of public services and, for those students with a global outlook, to aspire to international career pathways
provide students with opportunities to address contemporary issues facing the industry, and society at large, with particular emphasis on sustainability and the environment, recognising the role that public services plays in addressing these issues to offer students the chance of career progression in their chosen field, with particular emphasis on achieving management-level positions

Entry Requirements
  • Entrants will need Level 3 qualifications. This could include
    Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Protective Services/ Public Services (1080) - City and Guilds or BTEC - grade PPP or above, or MP for the 720 credit Extended Diploma.
    A Levels to a combination of 48 UCAS points - key subjects Business management, Sociology, Psychology, English literature, sport science, physical education

    Applicants should have GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 or above.

    Mature students may want to discuss qualifications and experience before applying, but are not exempt from the course if they do not have specific entry qualifications.

    international students can apply but should have achieved IELTS at 5.5 or above.

Career Opportunities
  • This course will prepare students for entry into public services, such as the police, allowing them to meet current requirements to be educated to degree level. The course supports progression into BSc (Hons ) programmes in relevant subjects such as criminology, law and ethics, justice and relevant business management.

Students on this course are normally eligible for a student loan depending on their circumstances.
Fees shown are per year.

There may be additional cost for ensuring students have adequate PPE, costs of transport to the college and offsite trips may require additional costs such as entrance fees. Study Tours will have additional costs depending on the tour offered.


Materials Required

Learners will have practical sessions and should ensure they have correct PPE. This includes suitable clothing, steel toe boots, water proofs. Learners will also find it useful to have their own devices (laptops, tablets) to bring to college for classwork and to access learning materials.
