Course Information

Working with animals can be challenging but it is a truly rewarding career.
A level 2 course provides the ideal opportunity to develop your interest and skills in caring for a wide variety of animals and their environments; preparing you for employment or progression to further courses in animal management.

This one year course contains a mixture of theory lessons, demonstrations, projects and practical work involving our onsite college animal collection. The course also requires you to complete at least 150 hours of work experience with an external employer within the animal care industry.

Course Content
  • Topics covered may include:

    Animal husbandry - you will work with our onsite animal collection which houses a range of small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates and livestock.
    Animal welfare involving feeding, cleaning, health checking and the monitoring of animal behaviour.
    Optional units will focus on animal biology, exotic animals and native animal care and rehabilitation.
Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs at Grade 3/D or above (including English, maths and science) OR minimum GCSE Grade 3/D and Level 1 Functional Skills.
    A genuine interest in caring for animals, a willingness to learn and motivation to gain a relevant work experience placement will also be taken into account.
Next Steps
  • Learners may wish to progress onto a Level 3 course in Animal Management (subject to entry requirements) or employment.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
All learners wear a college uniform: a KMC branded, blue polo shirt, blue or black cargo trousers and steel toe capped boots.
Trips are also planned into the year at an additional cost.

Materials Required

Basic stationery - pens, pencils, glue stick, A4 lever arch file, scientific calculator, ruler and eraser.
Access to IT equipment both at college and at home are needed to engage fully with all lessons.
