Course Information

For basic Chainsaw Certificate of Competence covering Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross Cutting Timber. It is a legal requirement under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations to hold a Chainsaw Certificate of Competence. Formerly CS30.1 and CS30.2

Course Content
  • This qualification is about the maintenance of a chainsaw and cross-cutting trees at ground level. Chainsaws used in aerial and ground work are covered. This work will be carried out in a workshop and/or a woodland environment. “Routine” maintenance in this standard means corrective and preventative maintenance that is carried out daily or at regular intervals by the operator prior to and during work.

    Cross-cutting operations will include cross-cutting timber under tension in the form of fallen branches, tops, tree sections, severed uprooted stems, horizontal stems, or any timber in a similar situation. Timber under low and moderate tension is covered, but not timber under the extreme tensions found in e.g. windblown trees.

Entry Requirements
  • Minimum age is 16 years
    Tetanus protection is recommended.

Materials Required

Writing materials - notebook and pen.
Packed lunch and drink, especially if we are working away from college all day.
Chainsaw Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to current industry standards is required for this course.
Work equipment is available from the college, but candidates’ own may be used, subject to checks by the instructor.
National Insurance (NI) number.
Waterproofs/change of clothes in case of inclement weather.
