Course Information

This course enables applicants to learn the basic skills, knowledge and understanding of working in agriculture and the countryside; preparing them for employment in the industry or progression to a more advanced course or apprenticeship.
Kingston Maurward College offers the ideal environment for students to develop their agricultural and countryside skills alongside their numeracy, literacy, IT, and study skills under expert guidance.

This one-year programme offers a broad range of subjects and practical skill development.
Assessment takes place throughout the year in the form of practical assessments and written assignments. Additional support is available to qualifying candidates.

  • Units covered may include:

    Health and Safety for land-based industries
    Farm animal husbandry
    Introduction to crop production
    Tractor driving, machinery operation and maintenance
    Practical countryside skills
    Estate maintenance
    English and maths
Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs grade 2/E or above, including English and maths.

    Interest and enthusiasm in working in the land-based industries is essential.
    Other experience within the land-based industries and your attitude to work/learning will also be considered at interview.

    Learners are expected to complete a minimum of 80 hours of work experience in the year with an external work placement provider.
Next Steps
  • Learners may wish to progress onto a Level 2 programme of study in Agriculture; the Level 2 Certificate in Land-based Engineering or an Apprenticeship in Agriculture (subject to entry requirements)
Career Opportunities
  • Employment opportunities could see you working as a general farm worker, tractor driver, working for an agricultural contractor, assistant shepherd/assistant herdsperson, assistant gamekeeper, assistant dairy person, contract milking or supporting roles in estate maintenance.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
Uniform - Kingston Maurward polo shirt. Other optional uniform includes a KMC gilet, jumper and waterproof coat.

A range of trips are planned throughout the year.

Materials Required

Basic stationery: calculator, pens, paper and folders.

All our learners are expected to wear clothing that must be suitable for the environment, weather and time of year for all practical/outdoor/workshop tasks, Including a KMC-branded polo shirt.
Protective navy blue overalls, steel toe-capped work boots and a hi-viz yellow tabard are mandatory for all practical activities across the college estate. Steel toe-capped wellington boots are also mandatory for livestock tasks.

Access to IT equipment at home and at college.

Tetanus vaccination is recommended.
