Course Information
The Level 3 T Level in Land Based Engineering is a two year qualification designed to prepare students for employment, apprenticeships or further study within the land based engineering and agricultural machinery sector.
This is a full-time course; you will spend 4 days a week at college and 1 day a week on your industry placement.
The course is made up of two key components. The Common Core develops underpinning knowledge required across the land based sector, including business and commercial understanding, sustainability, legislation, ethical principles, health and safety and safe working practices. This element is assessed through two written examinations.
Learners complete the Occupational Specialism in Land Based Engineering, developing technical knowledge and practical skills in the maintenance, repair and operation of land based machinery and equipment.
In your first year, you’ll focus primarily on the common core content. In your second year, the emphasis shifts to your occupational specialism. Your core will be assessed in Year 1, and your occupational specialism will be assessed in Year 2.
Learning is delivered through a combination of theory and practical sessions in college workshops and engineering facilities, supported by access to relevant machinery and equipment. Learners also complete a compulsory 315 hour employer led industry placement with an external engineering or agricultural machinery employer.

The course is divided into the following key areas:
· Core (exam & project): Health and Safety, Sustainability, Agriculture Sector, Ethics, Business, Equality, Communication, Relationship Management, Finance, Data & Information
· Pathway (exam & project): Biosecurity, Supply Chain, Land-Based Equipment & Machinery, Operating Principles, Maintenance, Repair & Diagnostics
· Specialism (practical & report writing): Maintaining Machinery, Repairing Equipment, Diagnosing Faults, Handover of Machinery
Entry Requirements

· 4 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, which include English and Maths. We will consider progression from the successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification achieved at Merit with Grade 4 English and Maths.
· Some farming experience before commencing the course is essential, as is the ability to cope with written work. An employer-led industry placement of at least 315 hours will need to be completed across the qualification. This placement must be a crop production-based placement.

• Learners may consider progressing onto the Higher National Diploma in Agriculture and/or a BSc Applied Agricultural Science at a different university provider or employment.
• Learners can progress to specific dealership apprenticeships or higher education apprenticeships on offer with providers other than Kingston Maurward (Coastland College).
Career Opportunities

• Employment opportunities could see you working as an Agriculture machinery technician, land-based service engineer or further training to become a land-based mechanic.
• Employment prospects for qualified and experienced young people with the right attitude are excellent as the industry is experiencing a skills shortage and many learners gain employment through or at their work experience placements.

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances. |

Assessment fees for some additional qualifications - usually between £70 and £150 per qualification for certificates of competence such as Tractor Driving. For some additional qualifications a contribution towards the cost of training may also be required. Uniform - Kingston Maurward polo shirt. Other optional uniform includes a KMC gilet, jumper and waterproof coat. A range of trips are planned throughout the year. |
Materials Required
Basic stationery: calculator, pens, paper and lever arch files.
All our learners are expected to wear a KMC-branded polo shirt and clothing suitable for the environment, weather and time of year for all practical/outdoor/workshop tasks.
Protective navy blue overalls, steel toe-capped work boots and a hi-viz yellow tabard are mandatory for all practical activities across the college estate.
Access to IT equipment at home and at college.
Tetanus vaccination is recommended.
