Course Information

Are you interested in a future working with animals and do you care about the environment?
Do you need some extra support to achieve your career aims?
This one year course will give you the opportunity to develop your knowledge, practical skills and team-working by working with a range of animal species in our college animal collection.

During this one year course you will also develop the abilities, personal qualities and employability skills to equip you for the next level course or future employment. You will be expected to complete a number of written and practical assessments throughout the year and you are required to complete at least 80 hours work experience with an external employer within the animal care industry.

  • Topics covered include:

    Husbandry of animals involving feeding, cleaning and health checking.
    Handling, restraint and exercising of animals.
    Safe and effective working.
    Preparation for working in the land-based sector.
Entry Requirements
  • GCSE grades 2/E or above, including maths and English OR Entry 3 Functional Skills OR an Entry Level qualification.
    Your attitude to learning will also be taken into account.
Next Steps
  • You may wish to progress onto a level 2 programme of study in animal care (or a related subject - subject to entry requirements) or other progression options could include employment, further work experience or an industry-relevant internship.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
All learners wear a college uniform: a KMC branded, blue polo shirt, blue or black cargo trousers and steel toe capped boots.
Trips are also planned into the year at an additional cost.

Materials Required

Basic stationery - pens, pencils, glue stick, A4 lever arch file, scientific calculator, ruler and eraser.
Access to IT equipment both at college and at home are needed to engage fully with all lessons.
