Course Information

The Animal Care and Management T Level comprises two main parts: the Common Core (where learners will cover key aspects of business, sustainability, ethical principles, health and safety and safe working practices) and the Occupational Specialism – these are key units covering animal welfare, health, behaviour, husbandry and specialised units covering exotic, wild and native animals, biology, anatomy and physiology amongst others.

This exciting 2-year qualification combines theory and practical lessons in a college setting – working within our extensive animal collection – alongside an extended industry placement with an external employer, which will span a minimum of 315 hours across the qualification.

Course Content
  • Topics covered will include:

    Animal husbandry - you will work extensively with our onsite animal collection which houses a range of small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates and livestock.
    Animal welfare, biology and nutrition.
    Wildlife rehabilitation, conservation and ecology.
    Exotic animal, aquatic and zoo collection management.
    Animal training and behaviour.
    Sustainability, legislation, principles of biosecurity, right and responsibilities, ethical principles, supply chain management and employability skills.

Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs Grade 4/C or above to include English and maths.
    Science GCSE (triple award) 554 or (double award) 55.
    Experience of working with animals and enthusiasm to work with a wide range of species are also essential.
Next Steps
  • Employment or Higher Education. This could be a degree course at KMC in the Animal Welfare and Science department or another degree course in a different university.

Course Fees

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.
All learners wear a college uniform: a KMC branded, blue polo shirt, blue or black cargo trousers and steel toe capped boots.
Trips are also planned into the year at an additional cost.

Materials Required

Basic stationery - pens, pencils, glue stick, A4 lever arch file, scientific calculator, ruler and eraser.
Access to IT equipment both at college and at home are needed to engage fully with all lessons.
