Course Information

Employers are looking for people with practical skills and in-depth knowledge of plants, soils, landscaping and design, coupled with a sound business sense. This one year course, equivalent to 1 and a half A Levels, will help you establish an all round understanding of horticultural principles and practices whilst working and learning in the Grade 2 listed Kingston Maurward gardens.

This course is suitable for anyone interested in a career working within the ‘green’ industries and would appeal to people with many different skill sets and interests – creative, scientific, energetic and entrepreneurial. You will also benefit from work experience where you will make essential contacts within the horticultural industry and perfect your knowledge.

Entry Requirements
  • 4 GCSEs at grade 4or above, including English, maths and a science OR a relevant Level 2 Certificate at Distinction level. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will also be considered. Numeracy and literacy screening assessments will take place. Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience, a keen and active interest in plants, commercial gardening and landscaping with the ability to cope with practical and written assessments and externally set exams.

There are no course fees for eligible students aged 16-18. Students aged 19-25 may also be eligible for government funding or a student loan depending on their circumstances.

Materials Required

Basic stationery: calculator, pens, paper and lever arch files. Suitable outdoor clothing - the clothing must be suitable for environment, weather and time of year. Protective overalls. Steel toe capped work boots. Hi-vis yellow vest, general work gloves. Department uniform: polo shirt and sweatshirt.T etanus protection is recommended. All protective equipment will be inspected by the Course Manager
